2025 Integrating Lumbar Directional Preference into an OMPT Model

Course Description:
This course is designed to provide an analysis of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) principles, and how this approach may be integrated into an Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy (OMPT) model. The course will guide clinicians in the analysis of lumbopelvic movement dysfunction and therapeutic exercise based on repeated end range spinal movements, directional preference, and patient response. The course will involve both lecture and laboratory sessions and will compare and contrast MDT and manual physical therapy schools of thought. The course format also includes lecture as well as patient demonstration, analysis and discussion.

Course Objectives
At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
– Describe the cardinal features of the McKenzie approach of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy (MDT) and contrast it to other treatment approaches.
– Analyze the findings from a subjective examination, active and repeated end range spinal movements to arrive at a MDT classification for the lumbopelvic region.
– Synthesize movement examination findings to classify lumbopelvic muscuoskeletal conditions and develop an exercise strategy for the patient based on centralization, directional preference, and stabilization principles.
– Demonstrate manual physical therapy procedures based on patient response.
– Discuss the current literature regarding the validity and reliability of MDT as a patient response method.

This course has been approved for 13 hours by the following boards:
– Florida Physical Therapy Association for PT and PTA

Continuing Education credit for each participant who meets the satisfactory course completion requirements (licensed in FL) will be automatically uploaded to CE Broker, which means the Florida Boards will have record of your attendance, even if you do not have your own personal CE Broker account. Course certificates will be provided at the completion of the course for those that meet the course completion requirements. Certificates will be mailed for courses that include a post-course test.
