This is an online course offering with no required start or end date. The course can be accessed at any time, and does not have to be completed in one sitting.
This course will provide an in depth review of tongue strength and its impact on swallowing, performance status and quality of life. The course will review physiologic changes to muscle with exercise. Data on normal and abnormal tongue strength will be discussed. Treatment paradigms to improve tongue strength will be reviewed. Tongue strengthening exercise outcomes in healthy and dysphagic individuals will be reviewed in terms of lingual strength, swallowing, performance status, and patient-rated quality of life. Recent research on tongue strength and associated outcomes in the treated head and neck cancer population will be presented. Future research needs will be discussed.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify the physiologic changes to muscles with exercise
- Describe how tongue strength impairment can affect swallowing, performance and patient-rated quality of life
- Interpret treatment protocols and their impact on function
