    The Aging Voice: Evidence Based Treatment Outcomes

    This is an online course offering with no required start or end date. The course can be accessed at any time, and does not have to be completed in one sitting. 

    This course will review the basic anatomy of vocal folds and vocal tract and discuss the normal changes of an “aging voice”.   It will review musculature that can be affected by an aging voice and when treatment or further evaluation is needed. Discussion of differences in voices of those with normal aging compared to aging voices that affects functional communication.   Information on voice disorders, the latest EB outcome measures/assessment tools for this population and EB treatment (both medical intervention and voice therapy) will be discussed. Other medical conditions that can attribute to presbyphonia/aging voice will be discussed.  Finally, case examples will be reviewed. 

    At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    • Identify the basic anatomy of normal aging vocal folds   
    • Describe presbyphonia or presbylaryngis and its effect on functional communication
    • Define other medical conditions that could attribute to presbyphonia
    • Interpret basic outcome measures and evaluation tools for the aging voice  
    • Show knowledge of EB treatment techniques of voice disorders for this population  
    • List the latest medical treatment options and referral to ENT  
    • Associate actual case examples and utilization of outcome measures
