    Implementation of Stroke Dysphagia Screening

This is an online course offering with no required start or end date. The course can be accessed at any time, and does not have to be completed in one sitting.

Screening for dysphagia in stroke patients is a best practice, yet screening is controversial in terms of who should administer the screening, should swallowing be directly tested, and what screening tool should be administered. In this course the need for dysphagia screening in stroke will be reviewed as well as current guidelines. Standards in which screening tools should be developed and critiqued will be identified as well as ways to facilitate administration of dysphagia screening by frontline health care providers.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

    • Identify and  list components of a good dysphagia screening tool
    • State strategies to facilitate accurate nursing implementation of a dysphagia screening tool
    • Describe 3 validated dysphagia screening tools.
